The town of Burnsville, North Carolina was founded on March 6, 1834, from land conveyed by John "Yellow Jacket" Bailey, and named after Captain Otway Burns, a naval hero of the War of 1812. Burnsville is also the seat for Yancey County and the main business center.
Burnsville's lush green springs, mild summers and stunning red and gold Octobers has made is a choice seasonal vacation spot. There are plenty of unique events to enjoy including a metric bike ride the last Saturday of April. Toe River Arts Council sponsored studio tours in June and December. The Parkway Playhouse, the oldest continually operating summer stock theater company is also located in Burnsville. The Parkway's season runs from June through September. Besides Mt. Mitchell there are 10 other mountains with peaks over 6000 ft. and over 100 miles of hiking trails in Yancey County
In 2010, the Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair observed its 54th anniversary. This event has over 200 booths and attracts thousands of unique artists and tourists is held during the first weekend of August.
